Promoting the Yorkshire Dales
Tourism works best through a “funnel” effect. The organisations at the top of this list promote the destination in order to increase the market size. Then everyone needs to do their bit to get the visitors through the funnel, so they reach individual tourism businesses in the Yorkshire Dales. So who does what?
VisitBritain promotes Britain in overseas markets. VisitEngland promotes England in Britain. They don’t have members & mainly work directly with destinations, supported by some paid partnerships with large tourism businesses.
Welcome to Yorkshire promotes Yorkshire within Yorkshire, nationally & internationally. WTY is the official agency for Yorkshire with the aim of making Yorkshire the most popular destination in the UK for business and leisure. They are a membership organisation so promotion is on a pay-to-play basis
Other destination organisations, representing particular areas within the Yorkshire Dales aim to protect & enhance their area so their focus is mainly on the destination itself. They’re not normally membership organisations.
Examples include: Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Harrogate Borough Council, Richmondshire District Council, Craven District Council etc.
The Dales Tourism Network is unofficial & independent. There's no cost for businesses to join. The focus is on practical, cost-effective local marketing & initiatives showing visitors the best of the Dales, to increase length of stay & visitor spend. It's run on a voluntary basis by Susan Briggs. Businesses can benefit from our initiatives and events.
As the visitor gets closer to their chosen destination (in real terms or when they’re planning their trip), local knowledge and more detailed information becomes more important. It’s essential that local tourism businesses collaborate and ensure appropriate information and promotional messages are available to visitors, and local residents. This is what the Dales Tourism Network aims to do.
We don’t have any funding for the network from any outside organization and we don’t charge for membership. You can see some of the work we've already done here.
