Distinctly Dales - local distinctiveness project

What's it all about?
We've worked with around 300 tourism businesses in the Yorkshire Dales, asking them to think about why their place is special. That “place” could be a village, a town, a dale – whatever felt personal to them. This was all part of a project funded by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

What have we done?
We arranged a series of events throughout the Dales. At each workshops, we looked at what makes each part of the Dales special and different. We tried to draw out the essential details, large and small, natural and manmade which combine to create a “sense of place”. After those events we collated all the ideas, circulated to everyone involved for additional comments and then put together information which you can now use.

We've collated all the reasons why you think the Dales are special, to create information for you to use. Visitors really want to know more about the Dales. They want your insider recommendations and ideas. They want more specific information. So instead of simply saying things like, "set in beautiful countryside in the Yorkshire Dales" we hope businesses will use some of the information we've collated to enhance the details they pass on to visitors, whether by email, in person or on their website.
